The relationship and differences between pressure sensors and level sensors.


Pressure sensors and level sensors are two types of sensors that we often use, but few people know their direct relationship and differences. Only by understanding the differences between pressure sensors and level sensors can one better choose the type they need. First, the measurement principles of pressure sensors and level sensors are similar. Both utilize the formula for the pressure exerted on the sensor when it is submerged in the measured liquid at a certain depth: P = ρ.g.H + Po, where P is the pressure on the liquid surface measured by the level gauge, ρ is the density of the measured liquid, g is the acceleration due to gravity (set at 9.8015 during calibration), Po is the atmospheric pressure at the liquid surface, and H is the depth of the sensor in the liquid. At the same time, the pressure of the liquid is introduced into the positive pressure chamber of the sensor through a gas-conducting stainless steel tube, and the atmospheric pressure Po at the liquid surface is connected to the negative pressure chamber of the sensor to offset Po at the back of the sensor, allowing the sensor to measure pressure as ρ.g.H. Clearly, by measuring pressure P, the liquid level depth can be obtained. The only difference is that the pressure sensor outputs pressure P, while the level sensor outputs depth H.
Secondly, the classification of pressure sensors and level sensors is different. Pressure sensors can generally be divided into strain gauge pressure sensors, ceramic pressure sensors, silicon piezoresistive pressure sensors, sapphire pressure sensors, and piezoelectric pressure sensors. Level sensors are generally divided into float level transmitters, buoy level transmitters, and hydrostatic level transmitters.
Level sensors can be said to be an extension of the functions of pressure sensors. In many cases, with slight modifications, level sensors and pressure sensors can be interchangeable. With the development of technology and changes in usage environments, the division of labor between pressure sensors and level sensors will become more detailed. They will also perform their respective functions, transforming pressure sensors and level sensors into two distinct families.
